Ghazal Alagh startup story: Ghazal Alaghs success story began with a mothers sense of care and protection. When she searched for safe and toxin-free baby care products for her child she found a huge lack of it in the Indian market. This need inspired her to establish Mamaearth in 2016 along with her husband Varun Alagh which has become one of the most successful D2C companies in India today.
Education and Career Beginning
Ghazal was born on 2 September 1988 in Gurugram Haryana in a middle-class family. She did BCA from Punjab University and trained in modern art from New York Academy of Art. She started her career as a corporate trainer at NIIT where she used to train engineers and managers of IT companies. After this she started initiatives like Dietexpert and Being Artsy but her biggest flight started with Mamaearth.
Success and expansion of Mamaearth
Mamaearth started with baby care products with an initial capital of just ₹25 lakh. Gradually the company ventured into skincare and cosmetics as well and added brands like Ayuga The Derma Co. Aqualogica. Mamaearth became Indias first “MADE SAFE” certified brand focusing on toxin-free products. The IPO of Honasa Consumer Ltd. in 2023 also made a lot of headlines but the companys market value declined drastically by the end of 2024.
Personal life and leadership philosophy
Ghazal and Varun have two sons Agastya and Ayan. They not only built a successful brand but also tested their products themselves. They follow the “85% rule” in their leadership philosophy which means that continuous effort is more important than perfection. They believe in a balanced lifestyle empowering the team and learning from mistakes.
New Investments and Future Plans
Ghazal Alagh invested in Kusha Kapilas undergarment brand UnderNeat in 2025 a seed funding round led by Fireside Ventures. The investment reflects her business approach which is focused on promoting new and innovative startups. Under her leadership Mamaearth and Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd. are continuously breaking new ground by adopting a digital-first approach in the Indian beauty and care industry.
